Days Off

I usually get caught up on a few things on my days off, even if my to do list never really becomes a got done list.

For one thing, I got my hair cut on Monday, finally, after weeks of walking around in public with split ends and bangs that hang in my eyes all the time because they are just a hair (har har!) to short to be tucked behind my ears.

After the haircut on Monday (by the way the boys were quite impressively occupied and didn't get restless the whole time!) we went to lunch at the Thai restaurant on Dickson street. The boys love sushi and shrimp, and it was my birthday so I decided to treat myself to some tom kha soup.
Z behaved as well as a wild monkey, standing on his chair, climbing off the chair and at one point I had to karate chop him into at least 155 little pieces just so we could place our order. While we were waiting for the food, the monkey boy turned mean, and his unruly impatience was wearing me out.
I had tried the 'oh, look at that neat looking painting, let's count the animals we see in it' and the 'what do you think, if you could paint the walls in here any color at all what would it be?' but no matter what the child grew more and more devilish. He said he didn't like shrimp or sushi, and all the times he had eaten it before and pronounced them his favorite foods ever, he was only pretending.
Then I noticed little horns protruding through his hair on top of his head and that's when he said that he would like to paint a big picture of my face on the wall and then paint a big X over it. Yeah, he's real cute that way....
Finally the food came and while W and I ate and enjoyed our delicious lunch, Z crossed his arms in continued defiance for just about a minute until he couldn't stand it any longer. With one of the chopsticks he stabbed the California Roll, dipped it in soy sauce, and ate it up in one bite. We finished up, and after our plates had been cleared, I looked at Z and without a word he apologized, "I'm sorry I said those mean things."
"That's fine, but why were you acting up and being so rowdy?"
"Because I was hungry."
