Jul Traditioner
Julen har för mig har alltid varit en blandad kombination av båda Svenska och Amerikanska traditioner. Huset får en jul stämning redan vid första advent, men jag själv kopplar sällan av tills den tredje advent.
Pojkarna har varsin adventkalender som hänger i hallen utanför deras rum. Varje morgin hittar dom en liten överaskning i dagens ask. Det finns ingenting som liknar en adventkalender på Amerikansk TV eller radio.
Risgrynsgröt. Mina pojkar älskar risgrynsgröt. Det är en god sak som amerikaner inte kokar upp. Men de beror nog into på religion. Kanske dom är på Atkins dieten.
Flätade pappershjärtan. Martha Stewart visade faktiskt hur man gör dem på en av hennes julavsnitt några år sen.
Julgranen. Förr i tiden, dvs före Jesus och ännu längre bak i tiden, brukade folk hänga saker på levande granar ute i skogen. Det har jag läst nånstans. Men jag gillade ännu bättre svaret J hittade på som ingick i en dialog mellan honom och äldsta sonen häromdagen:
J: Don't hang the ornaments on the tree until we hang the garland.
W: What is garland?
J: Garland is - go look it up in the dictionary. [We are encouraging W to find out the real meaning to words by looking them up in the dictionary.]
W (goes and gets the dictionary) : It says 'A wreath or chain of flowers used as decoration; A mark of honor or tribute, a symbol of victory'
W: So why do we hang garland on a Christmas tree?
J: Because we are honoring the tree this time of year. In the winter many trees lose their leaves and many other plants die when the weather is colder and the days are shorter. We are honoring the evergreen tree because it remains green and contimues to provide shelter for many creatures in the wintertime.
