No TV
About a month ago... actually almost two months ago now that I think about it.... our house was struck by lightening and the charge zapped our new flat screen TV and the DVD player/ stereo. We found a local TV repair shop who checked it all out and said they could repair them. All they needed were some parts they would order from the manufacturer, Phillips. No problem. Even our insurance agent said that the cost of the repairs could be filed under our homeowners policy.
Now it is about 6-weeks later and the TV repair shop still has the TV and every now and then they call and leave a message on the answering machine about the Part that is on order. Or the Part that still hasn't come in the mail from the manufacturer, or The Part the manufacturer sent, but it was the Wrong Part, and they should be getting the Correct Part next week sometime.
Meanwhile we don't have a TV. Well, we do. We have a really really small one with a built in VHS video player. But it's pretty much the boys designated GameCube TV. We can watch it if we absolutely have to.
The great thing is I don't miss the TV. Not that I watched much TV before anyway.... but it's not that. It's quieter. The kids are more quiet, generally speaking, in the evenings. The noise is gone. We can hear eachother. We are reading more, talking to eachother more. I am painting more. We are sitting in the backyard more... maybe because it feels so good in the backyard, with the cool Canadian air mass and all.
But we are not suffering without the TV.
Imagine that.
I wouldn't care if we never got the thing back... except it was a flat screen.... and every once in a while I might want to watch a movie. Like Amelie.
But not tonight. Tonight I am going to turn off this computer, snuggle under my covers in bed, and read a couple more chapters in The Grapes of Wrath.
