Saying Goodbye

Cordless Coolness!
Today we have spent most of the day cleaning up and clearing out.
I took down the Christmas tree and all the decorations. It's a strange thing, Christmas decorations. When I was a kid it was all magical. Now it seems lighted candles embody the most magic to me. But the boys like all the other stuff, I think. The glittery garland, the twinkling lights, the shiny glass ornaments.... Odd things to consider special, really.

Two more Holiday cards to mail. Just now got the addresses...
After X-mas had been stuffed in assorted boxes, I spent time clearing out in the hobby room. The closet has been crammed with things like old board games, unframed paintings, flyfishing tackle, old coats and a stack of photo-filled boxes as tall as my 9-year old.

It has been unseasonable warm. Like spring. Almost.
While I will keep the photos, for now, I said good-bye to many other things. So long, old old old duck decoy. Maybe you are a valuable antique, whatever. So long, My First Sewing Machine. You are just gathering dust since I got mom's old Husqvarna. So long, Chutes and Ladders, Candyland, and Operation. So long, old VCR. So long cassette tape of the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack.

In the attic.
J used the tools his dad gave him for his birthday to construct and lay additional flooring in the attic. Ironic. Making more square feet of space to hold fewer things we seem to need to hang on to.

Maybe we should decorate up there with an oriental rug, some pillows...
We are used to hanging on to things. Yet, it is amazingly liberating (only superficially painful) to cast off things that are long forgotten or broken.
I like to keep things I love around me. I do have sentimental attachments to some things, like the art my children have created, or the handiwork of people in our family.

Back into the attic for you little fellas.
