Weekend in an acorn cap

Last Friday night the planets and stars aligned in some distant galaxy and J and I had a night to ourselves while the boys, both of them, spent the night with friends. Since it wasn't until late in the day Friday that we knew it would turn out that way, we hadn't planned on doing anything special, like go out, so we sat on the couch for fifteen minutes staring at the turned off TV and in the silence we could hear each others thoughts so we didn't speak. But we were thinking, "What do you want to do?" "I dunno, what do you want to do?" "I don't know... what do you want to do?"
Finally the galaxy where the moons and planets had been aligned wobbled a bit and that's when I got up to put on a pot of coffee because I could feel a yawn coming on. J went out to the backyard and lit the fire pit thing, stacked up a cord of firewood beside it, and pulled up a couple of lawn chairs to the warm backyard pseudo campfire.

Meanwhile, as the coffee brewed, I went to change into something more comfortable, (super warm wool sweater and a pair of extra thick thermal fleece comfy pants,) and got the wool blankets out of the hall closet to put on the lawn chairs.

Finally, there we were, sitting by the fire holding hot mugs of coffee under a dark evening sky, alone.

We could hear the crickets chirping.
Yeah! I didn't know they were still out this time of year either!
We could also hear the roar of the jet plane that landed at Drake field as it dropped off the Razorback band after the LSU game.

We enjoyed a long relaxing conversation free of any Ineedto's or willyou's. We talked about religion, literature, art, and life. Who knew?

The next morning I am at the kitchen table, Christmas shopping, with Peper in my lap, a cup of coffee next to the laptop, and the credit card gleaming in the diffused light from the overcast sky outside the kitchen window.

Ahh, to shop online!
The online stores Amazon, Wal-Mart.com, Legoshop.com, were sold-out of the one big thing on Z's wish list, but we finally found it at Target. I don't know if we will get it there though, I am having a really hard time justifying the expense... But on the other hand, it is Christmastime and it is what he has been wanting for months, well, that and just about every Star Wars clone trooper action figure made, and a sleeping bag, and every other Lego thing. And a tent.
J has already purchased W's gifts - some camping stuff, including a new sleeping bag. Glad to get it all done, and not having to fight the crowds and waste gas in traffic in the meantime!

Hm. I was about to write all about what the boys and I did today while J has been at work, but I am ready to turn off the computer....

....Alright, then. Cleaned house, wiped down smudgy handprinted doors, went to the store and bought polyester fiber fill and some paint-them-yourselves plaster miniature winter village houses, went to the library where I ran into Ati who told me all about their recent trip to the Big Bend National Park, and then after the library we went to the bookstore to buy a Consumer Reports magazine for J, and then we went home, and here we are. Oh, I almost forgot - we stopped to pick a heaping armload of acorns from under the oak tree next to my usual prking spot at my work. I don't know yet what we are going to do with all of them. Maybe toss them about the backyard to attract more squirrels for the entertainment of our knock-out-gorgeous cairn Peper!

Whew!

Now it's time to put the laptop to sleep. Me too. G'night!
